Safety & respect
Flagstaff sits at about 7,000 feet. Late-October evening tours can be cold, and it sometimes snows, so dress for it. This is a historic house museum: stay with your guide and don't touch the collections.
Lore note
Built in 1904 for two Riordan families, the house was designed by Charles Whittlesey, who also designed the Grand Canyon's El Tovar Hotel. It has forty rooms, more than 13,000 square feet of living space, and servants' quarters. The park bills its October tours as adult storytelling, 'tales of the fantastic and the factual.' The ledger makes no ghost claims about the family.

Two Riordan families built a single house in the logging town of Flagstaff, finished in 1904. Arizona State Parks calls it a remarkable example of Arts and Crafts architecture. It has forty rooms, log-slab siding, volcanic stone arches and hand-split shingles. The architect was Charles Whittlesey, who also designed El Tovar on the Grand Canyon. Guided tours run on the hour and show the house’s Craftsman furnishings, including pieces from Edison, Stickley and Steinway.
October at the mansion
The park runs its own Riordan Mansion Halloween Tours on Oct 28, 29 and 30, 2026, at 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Reservations are required (as of Oct 2026, check the park site). The park describes them as storytelling for adults, mixing the fantastic and the factual. The ledger doesn’t add ghost claims about the Riordans. If the tour tells you a story, it’s the park’s story.
Press-history neighbor
Flagstaff’s own territorial paper turns up in the ledger’s Kansas City airship file. The Flagstaff Sun-Democrat reprinted the April 1897 dispatch and then printed a cocktail recipe for seeing airships. Nearby Williams gave us the 1903 Grand Canyon wild man.
Safety callouts
Altitude and cold. At about 7,000 feet, October evenings in Flagstaff can drop below freezing. Bring layers for the evening tours.
Museum rules. Stay with your guide and don’t touch the furnishings.
Archivist’s margin
Book the daytime tour for the architecture. Book the October night tour if you want the stories, and remember they’re the park’s.
