Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it in the open. The original wording stays visible next to a dated note (or in the file's update history), and the fix is logged here. We don't silently rewrite case files. If you spot an error, the most useful report names the source that disagrees. Policy: How we work.

Correction log

  1. Map pin

Map pins at ancestral sites (Montezuma Castle, Casa Grande Ruins, Wupatki, Nine Mile Canyon)

Removed the remaining map pins at ancestral sites, in line with the no-pins-at-ancestral-sites rule: the NPS decimal pin and site map on Montezuma Castle, and the street-address map embeds on Casa Grande Ruins, Wupatki and Nine Mile Canyon (rock art). Each page now links only to the land manager’s official directions, and the site map lists them as “Ancestral archaeological site — no pin.”

  2. Map pin

Map pin at a sacred landscape (Boynton Canyon Trail #47)

Removed the trailhead map embed (a street-search pin) from Boynton Canyon, in line with the no-pins-at-sacred-sites rule. The page now links to the USFS Red Rock Ranger District directions on the trail page, and the site map lists it as “Sacred landscape — no pin.”

  3. Image credit ref 69d9e5e

Mothman Festival Returns to Point Pleasant — image credit

Hero image license corrected from an unverified “CC BY-SA” to CC BY 4.0 (Pokemonprime) after checking the Wikimedia Commons file page. Same pass fixed five other vague credit lines: Deception Island (CC BY 4.0), Jersey Devil (CC BY-SA 2.0), Tremonton (CC BY-SA 4.0), and the two Superstition Mountains heroes (CC BY-SA 4.0).

  4. Fact ref 8fbc787

Woods Canyon Lake / Mogollon Rim

The lore note called the 1903 I. W. Stevens “wild man” story a Mogollon Monster precursor set on the Rim. The 1903 newspapers place it at the extreme lower end of the Grand Canyon in Mohave County; the Arizona Republican reprinted it as a joke, and the Mogollon link came much later. Original sentence kept with a dated correction note; full trail in the Grand Canyon Wild Man case file.

  5. Case correction

The LA Freeway Orb: A Dawn Chopper Clip, Re-dated

Record correction at intake: the viral 12-second clip does not show an evening rush hour, and it was not shot live on Tuesday 22 September. It sits roughly 26 minutes into FOX 11’s archived chopper-camera livestream from the morning of Tuesday 15 September 2026 (about 6:24 a.m. PT, civil twilight). Its first viral appearance was an @UAPWixy repost on X on 22 September; every tabloid write-up we found descends from that single post. No FAA, police, AARO or station statement has been located.

    Sources FOX 11 Los Angeles YouTube livestream, streamed 15 Sep 2026 (clip ~26:11–26:23) · @UAPWixy on X, 22 Sep 2026 · Daily Mail (23 Sep 2026); NY Post (24 Sep 2026); IBTimes UK (25 Sep 2026)

  6. Figure revised ref f38a3b1

Mothman Festival Returns to Point Pleasant — attendance

Attendance estimate revised from about 32,000 (cellphone-derived unique visitors) to about 35,000 after Main Street Point Pleasant’s updated figure (WV News, 22 Sep 2026). Both figures stay on the page as dated updates.

  7. Map pin ref f02944a

Urquhart Castle · Loch Ness — map pin and credit

Map pin added only once a heritage-body source could be cited (Canmore site 12547, 57.32463, −4.44144), replacing the earlier “omit until HES/Canmore” note; hero image license corrected to CC BY-SA 3.0 (Nilfanion).

  8. Map pin ref c174fc4

Map pins without an official source (Casa Grande, Roswell and museum entries)

Removed decimal pins that came from address geocoding rather than an agency page — Casa Grande Ruins (32.994, −111.538), the Roswell case locale pin, and museum / asylum pins — in favor of official map links and street-address searches. Agency-published decimals were tightened where available (e.g. Lost Dutchman State Park).
