In May 1851 a Memphis paper reported a giant, hair-covered “wild man” chasing cattle in Greene County, Arkansas. Within five weeks the item had run from Little Rock to Vermont, and by December it was in a Wellington newspaper. That's a lot of reprints, but every one of them goes back to one story.
For about a decade, frontier Arizona told stories of a huge red animal carrying a corpse. An 1893 newspaper said a rancher finally shot it, and it was a camel, laced with knotted rawhide. The camels were real. Almost everything else rests on a single story.
A Cody, Wyoming resident says the white lights he watched rise over Cedar Mountain all last winter came back in late September 2026. Every account traces to one local news report. Open, and most likely prosaic, until someone lines up flight tracks and sky charts.
