At about ten on a Sunday night in October 1894, one brilliant fireball crossed Arizona Territory. Flagstaff saw it burst over the Elden mountains, Mesa “just this side of Superstition,” and Globe felt a detonation that “shook the earth.” Mohave County had it hit Wallapai mountain, and Tucson called it “the first dispatch from Mars.”
Australia's most famous ghost story says Frederick Fisher's spirit sat on a fence rail and pointed to his own grave. The 1826–27 newspapers report the murder, the search, an Aboriginal tracker and a trial, but no ghost. The apparition first appears in print in an anonymous poem in 1832, and in 1841 the man said to have seen it denied it.
In December 1900, families living in the ruins of the abandoned Fort Lowell said a tall figure in high boots and a soldier's uniform was coming out of the walls at night. Shots and dogs couldn't catch it. Within weeks two territorial papers had turned it into a running joke, and the people who first reported it were nearly written out of their own story.
Haunted Canyon, in the mountains between Superior and Globe, is said to have been named by a prospector who sat out a terrifying monsoon there in 1891. That story is hard to pin down. What the papers do show is the name in casual use by 1893, and by 1896 a Phoenix paper selling the canyon as “an ideal summer resort.”
Six days after Kelso, 23 children at an Invercargill school said they had seen the airship in broad daylight. The local paper printed two of their drawings. The Press Association's verdict went around the country: the drawings were “not a bit alike” and the children's testimony “need not be taken very seriously.”
In 1873 a Dunedin paper announced that a live moa had been seen “alive and in the flesh” in Southland. The runholder wrote in to say his shepherd hadn't said “moa” at all. Eighteen months later a Christchurch paper printed a letter about two moas roped near Browning Pass. They then “escaped,” and another paper called the whole thing a hoax.
In the summer of 1891 the Colorado River spilled into the dry Salton Sink and made a real new lake. Within days a “special” dispatch had put a fifty-foot sea serpent in it. Some papers played along, one claimed to confirm it, and Yuma's paper later dismissed the serpent stories as “trash.” Part one of a two-part case.
For a month in the autumn of 1894, people on South Main Street in Tucson reported a night prowler that changed shape: a dog, a hog, a burro, a man on all fours. Armed parties hunted it, and rumor blamed an elderly Tohono O'odham woman. Then the Citizen announced that “the Main street spook has been laid.” It was a thief in a pillow-case mask.
Six weeks after Phoenix's Salton sea serpent, a Tucson paper told how a fire bell, a frightened teamster and a moonlit crowd led to a seven-headed monster rising from the flooded Santa Cruz and preaching a sermon about rain and real estate. Yuma's paper called it “trash.” Part two of the Salton serpent case.
In May 1851 a Memphis paper reported a giant, hair-covered “wild man” chasing cattle in Greene County, Arkansas. Within five weeks the item had run from Little Rock to Vermont, and by December it was in a Wellington newspaper. That's a lot of reprints, but every one of them goes back to one story.
On April 19, 1897, The Dallas Morning News printed a dispatch saying an airship had crashed into a judge's windmill in Aurora, Wise County, killing a pilot 'not an inhabitant of this world.' The Texas State Historical Association calls it what it was: a fictional story written to put a dying town back on the map.
Forty years after the Hydesville rappings, Margaret Fox Kane stood on the stage of New York's Academy of Music and made the famous raps with her toe joint. A year later she took the confession back.
Our first monthly archive pack: eight period newspaper reports from 1888 to 1938, each paired with what came later. That might be a confession, a debunk, or the reason it's still open. It runs from a Phoenix fireball to a New Zealand ghost scare.
On the night of 1 April 1897, thousands in Kansas City watched a moving light the wire called an airship. Flagstaff reprinted the dispatch a week later. Two weeks after that, it printed a cocktail recipe for seeing one.
At noon on 23 July 1909 schoolchildren in Kelso, West Otago, watched a boat-shaped “airship” circle over their school. A reporter got six drawings that he called “dumbfounding to all sceptics.” Within three weeks the scare had spread nationwide, and the papers were finding fire balloons, a lantern and a confessed hoax.
A skull found on the Lower Murrumbidgee in 1846 was hailed in the Sydney Morning Herald as proof of an unknown animal. Five months later, in the same paper, a naturalist identified it from its milk teeth as a malformed foal. Then the skull disappeared.
In September 1898, an elderly woman on the east side of Phoenix asked the county for protection from someone pelting her home with stones. Crowds came to watch, two rival papers covered it, and nine months later the case had still never been explained.
A golden-trailed fireball crossed the Salt River Valley at dinnertime on 6 October 1906 and broke up with a boom. Callers feared an explosion, the Weather Bureau observer timed it with his watch, and Tucson and Phoenix each said it passed right over them.
In the winter of 1905, Christchurch papers reported a masked man in a luminous coat frightening women at night. By October the scare had reached the Hutt, where a local paper investigated one sighting and found an old white cow in the moonlight.
For about a decade, frontier Arizona told stories of a huge red animal carrying a corpse. An 1893 newspaper said a rancher finally shot it, and it was a camel, laced with knotted rawhide. The camels were real. Almost everything else rests on a single story.
On the evening of November 17, 1896, a bright light drifted southwest over Sacramento, and by the next day the city was full of people who said they'd heard voices, singing and orders shouted from it. The San Francisco Call ran it across its front page. This is where America's great airship wave starts.
For a couple of years, a 'tiger' was blamed for killing sheep in South Australia's south-east. When a shooter dropped a large canid in August 1895, the local experts called it a European wolf. A modern historian says wildlife experts now think alpine dingo.
Not an anomaly, just the history of a holiday. In 1885 a Yuma paper had to explain Halloween as a custom from back East. By 1901 Tombstone boys were swapping the lawyer's and the grocer's signs, and by 1910 Winslow parties had a haunted house and a witch's den.
During the 1897 airship wave, a Kansas rancher's story of a craft that lassoed his heifer became one of the era's best-known yarns. Kansas City's Journal treated it as comedy within days; a 1943 item quoted the local editor saying it was invented.
In July 1937 something huge kept surfacing in an eddy of the White River below Newport. Within weeks there was a fence, a 25-cent admission, barbecue, a “Monster Dance” and a hired diver with an eight-foot harpoon. He found nothing. In 1973 the state Senate made the river a monster refuge anyway.
A 66-year-old Washington retiree walked into the Superstition Mountains in June 1931 to look for the Lost Dutchman mine and did not come out. Three wire services and a local weekly reported his death three different ways, and none of them recorded a verdict that we can find.
Arizona's Bigfoot lore is often traced to a 1903 Williams News front page. The archive shows something else: a lower Grand Canyon tall tale, syndicated coast to coast under three different credits, and mocked in Phoenix within two weeks.
In April 1890 the Tombstone Epitaph reported that two ranchers had shot a 160-foot winged creature in the desert. A week later a Florence paper reprinted it and signed it “The Epitaph Liar.” The famous photograph of the beast doesn't show up until 1963, and nobody has ever produced one.
Between 1924 and 1930, lead crosses and swords with Latin inscriptions came out of the caliche beside an old lime kiln on Silverbell Road. They seemed to tell of a Roman-Jewish colony in eighth-century Arizona. The 1925 skeptics had it right: they're a hoax.
